Nickel-based oxyhydroxides are among the most promising catalysts for alkaline water electrolysis, and understanding how catalyst structure influences oxygen evolution is essential for improving their performance. In this work, the Hiden HPR-40 DEMS combined with the ECL-Static electrochemical cell was used to monitor oxygen evolution from vertically oriented Fe-doped β-NiOOH catalysts during electrochemical testing. The simple ECL-Static configuration enabled continuous dissolved gas analysis while catalyst activity and stability were evaluated under realistic operating conditions.

The DEMS system was calibrated to provide quantitative oxygen evolution measurements, allowing oxygen production to be directly correlated with electrochemical performance throughout the study. These measurements complemented operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, demonstrating that Fe doping stabilises the nickel valence cycle responsible for efficient oxygen evolution while maintaining excellent long-term catalyst stability. By confirming that the measured electrochemical current corresponded directly to oxygen production, the HPR-40 provided an important quantitative link between catalyst structure and performance.

This study demonstrates how the HPR-40 DEMS can be integrated with advanced operando characterisation techniques to provide quantitative validation of catalyst activity, making it an excellent example of electrochemical mass spectrometry in modern catalyst development.
