Carbon monoxide is one of the most important products of electrochemical CO₂ reduction, but its direct measurement by mass spectrometry is complicated by overlapping signals from CO₂ and N₂ at m/z 28. This paper demonstrates how the flexibility of the Hiden HPR-40 DEMS can overcome this long-standing analytical challenge using two complementary sampling configurations.
A custom cell was combined with the ECL-Probe for real-time monitoring of dissolved gas and Micro-Flow Inlet Capillary for direct analysis of headspace gas. By reducing the electron ionisation energy to 16 eV, fragmentation of CO₂ and N₂ was effectively eliminated, allowing selective detection of CO without chromatographic separation. Following calibration, the system provided quantitative measurements of CO and other gaseous products, enabling continuous monitoring of catalyst performance under changing electrochemical conditions.
The study highlights several unique capabilities of the HPR-40 platform, including flexible sampling options, adjustable ionisation conditions and quantitative gas analysis within a single instrument. It is an excellent reference for researchers seeking rapid, interference-free measurement of CO during CO₂ reduction, while demonstrating how the HPR-40 can support both real time dissolved gas analysis and conventional headspace analysis using the same mass spectrometer.
