Key Capabilities: Sub-second response, real-time product analysis, transient measurements, operando DEMS.

Pulsed electrolysis is attracting considerable interest as a method of improving CO₂ reduction performance, but understanding the transient changes occurring during each potential pulse requires analytical techniques with exceptionally fast response times. In this study, the Hiden HPR-40 DEMS coupled with the ECL-Insight electrochemical cell provided continuous, real-time monitoring of gaseous reaction products during alternating anodic and cathodic potential pulses applied to silver and copper electrodes.

The rapid response of the DEMS system enabled quantitative measurement of transient changes in product formation with sub-second time resolution, allowing the effects of pulse conditions on catalyst performance to be directly observed. By combining these measurements with diffusion modelling and spectroscopic techniques, the authors demonstrated that short anodic pulses temporarily increase the local CO₂ concentration while simultaneously modifying the catalyst surface. These effects enhanced CO production on silver and promoted the formation of multicarbon products on copper.

This work highlights the unique ability of the HPR-40 DEMS to investigate rapidly changing electrochemical systems that cannot be resolved using conventional gas chromatography, making it an outstanding reference for researchers developing advanced pulsed electrolysis strategies.
