Hiden Analytical will be attending the 8th International Congress on Operando Spectroscopy, taking place from 10-14 May 2026 in Asilomar, CA, USA. Representing Hiden Analytical at the event will be Gerard Duffy, of Hiden Inc, and David Lundie, who will be onsite to support your spectroscopy needs.
Hosted via SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the conference focuses on the latest advances in operando and in situ characterisation—i.e., probing functional materials in their working state to build reliable structure–function relationships. It brings together researchers developing and applying spectroscopy across the electromagnetic spectrum (from IR to X-rays and beyond) to real-world systems including catalysts, batteries, and sensors, with an emphasis on methodological progress and experimental rigour under realistic operating environments.
What to Expect?
-
A specialist congress dedicated to advancing operando methodologies—characterisation of functional materials in their working state, under realistic environments and stimuli.
- A strong emphasis on in situ/operando spectroscopy workflows (from IR to X-ray regimes and complementary methods), with discussion centred on what the data means under operating conditions.
- A focused, single-event format designed for deep technical exchange—methods, experimental design, and interpretation challenges—rather than broad “catch-all” programming.
Hiden Analytical at Operando VIII:
-
Meet Gerard Duffy, of Hiden Inc, and David Lundie to explore how quadrupole mass spectrometry complements operando spectroscopy by providing time-resolved gas and vapour speciation—helping link surface/structure changes to evolving reaction environments.
- Discussion of measurement integrity under operando conditions: response time vs. sensitivity, background control, fragmentation/overlaps, calibration strategies, and maintaining quantitative confidence during transients.
- Application-led exchange for operando-relevant areas (commonly central to this community): heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemical energy conversion/storage, and materials under reactive atmospheres—where multi-species, trace-level detection can be decisive.
-
Sharing best practice on sampling and interfacing (dead volume, line materials, condensation control, pressure management) to keep gas-phase data representative of the true operando state.
-
Exploring collaboration pathways—from feasibility studies and method development to robust workflows that align gas analysis with spectroscopy timebases and experimental metadata for publishable, reproducible datasets.
